Circus is a powerful means to build community. Circuses all
over the world use the art form to bridge cultural divides and to
bring people together to hear music, to laugh, and to get a shot
of hope that even the seemingly impossible can be achieved.
Circus
Center offers its community several programs designed to give as
many people as possible opportunities to experience the magic of
circus.
Our
at-risk youth program, funded by local
foundations, teaches circus skills to young people from throughout
the city to help them develop self-confidence, self-esteem, teamwork
skills and trust in others.
Aviatrix,
our program for women who have experienced violence, provides training
in basic circus skills and clowning to help the participants in
their recovery processes.
Clown
Conservatory students perform in nursing homes, hospital pediatric
care units and adult day-care centers.
Performers
from New Pickle Circus and the San Francisco Youth Circus regularly
stage free shows for community festivals, neighborhood fairs,
and civic celebrations.
We
provide scholarships to low income and disadvanted children
to attend our annual circus camp, a nine-week summer program
that features basic training in circus skills and performances.
We
distribute free tickets to the Pickle's
annual holiday shows to non-profit organizations serving homeless
families, at-risk youth, low-income seniors, the disabled, and people
with AIDS. In addition, we provide tickets to 50-60 non-profit groups
which they then raffle or auction for their own fundraising programs.
This
year well over 100,000 people will benefit from these community
programs that are the cornerstone of Circus Center's community outreach.
